I often describe my design goals in relation to my experience as a sports photographer; yes, the big touchdowns, celebrations, etc. are important to capture, but it’s the less flashy moments — the determination on their faces before the whistle blows, the handshakes off the field between teammates and coaches — that speak volumes about the experience the athletes are going through. As such is the case with design — the seamless integrations that bring moments of delight to our customers, the relief when customers from all backgrounds find our services accessible and useful, and not having to think twice while using your products – that’s what I call success.
I’ve got a head start on the “you are not your user” mindset, thanks to the 25 years I spent growing up and working at my parents’ restaurant where “the customer’s always right.” And since my middle school years, I loved stage management and working behind-the-scenes — things that helped the actors on stage shine. Similarly, my passion in design is very much about serving and helping others shine and do better work. Challenging problems inspire me, but what really motivates me is being able to simplifying complexity through intentionality, and empowering people.
